Time to consider benefits of wonder spice turmeric, says health and well-being expert Denise Kelly

You may have seen on the news and in the papers recently an amazing story about a courageous lady, Dieneke Ferguson, who after five years of living with cancer and the horrid side-effects from repeated unsuccessful conventional treatment, thought she was finally losing her battle to cancer. In her words she had a “serious relapse” and there seemed little hope.

Dieneke had been diagnosed with the blood cancer myeloma in 2007 and had undergone three rounds of chemotherapy as well as four stem cell transplants.

Then, just by chance apparently she came across an internet support group who were advocating the use of the incredible spice turmeric, as a potential benefit for her type of cancer. So I guess she thought she had nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Every year about 5,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with myeloma. It occurs when the white blood cells produced in the bone marrow multiply uncontrollably and stop producing the normal antibodies needed to fight infection. The process causes bone damage, intense pain, fatigue and nerve damage, and is quite unpleasant.

It would seem that everyone at the moment is talking about various herbs and spices that apparently are a “cure” or “prevention” for cancer. Of course, its impossible to say without extensive studies what really is working.

Turmeric Powder

However, the evidence pointing towards the unbelievable benefits of this bright orange super spice is proving to be one of the best herbal approaches to the treatment or prevention of various types of cancer.

Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant agent that has been directly linked to a reduction in certain cancers and is a wonderful addition to any diet as a preventative measure and as a means of slowing metastasis of cancerous growth. The health benefits of turmeric are extensive, and I have been a massive fan for some years now.

It can help to reduce inflammation in the body, as well as helping to heal wounds, improve skin health, protect cognitive abilities, and ease menstrual difficulties. Turmeric also helps eliminate depression, alleviate pain, slows the aging process, protects the digestive tract, and the benefits it has shown in cancer patients has been remarkable.

Personally I think we should all have turmeric in our daily diets as a preventative measure. I would say you should be consuming at least 1 teaspoon per day, but of course you can have more. Add to your soups, stews, rice dishes etc.

Or add some in your morning smoothies for that extra health kick. Or, if you prefer to just pop a pill, you can buy this wonder spice as a supplement. However you decide to include it, its wonderful health benefits are proving to be very worth while.
