Potential have-a-go heroes are being urged to attend a special day staged by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service as they look to recruit firefighters.

The service is continuing its retained firefighter recruitment drive this summer with a second have-a-go day, to be held at Chichester Fire Station on Saturday 24th June from 10am-3pm.

Retained firefighters – members of the community who are on-call to respond to incidents as needed – staff 14 of the 25 stations and support fulltime crews at a further nine stations.

Put simply, the fire service couldn’t provide the service they do without them, says fire chief Gary Locker, who added: “We are working very hard to stem the gap we currently have in terms of our retained firefighter numbers. Our current crews do an absolutely superb job but they need more colleagues.

“Our have-a-go days aim to give people a chance to ask questions of current retained firefighters, to try some of the physical tests and to use some of the equipment involved in the recruitment process. If you’ve ever been curious to find out more about retained firefighting, or know someone else that may be interested, please drop in at any time from 10am-3pm on 24th June, we’d be delighted to see you there.”

The day, part of a series of have-a-go events that WSFRS is staging across the county in 2017, is at Chichester Fire Station, however the event is open to anyone wherever they live.
