Hard task-master, Miles! Chi City boss Rutherford demands ‘more intensity’ after 4-1 win over Selsey

Chichester City boss Miles Rutherford watched his charges thump Selsey 4-1 in last night’s Peter Bentley Cup tie at Oaklands Park — and then demanded more from his players.

Skipper Jack Lee scored twice to help his side come from behind after Jake Goulding had given the visitors a 23rd-minute lead. Goulding, who played for Chichester in a friendly only a few weeks ago against Folland Sports, has started the season in sizzling form for his new club.

And he bagged a brace against Midhurst & Easebourne in the previous round and was also on target in the two league games at the Bunn Leisure Stadium.

But Lee had the goal in his sights and hit a double; his first came on 38 minutes then he added another two minutes later. And the hosts made it four before the break when Robert Hutchings, in his first game back for his new club after serving a three-match suspension following a red card in the FA Cup at Binfield, made it 3-1.

Josh Clack struck on 44 minutes to put the tie beyond the Blues. But despite the victory, Rutherford is looking for more from his team. He said: “To be honest, we were poor in the first twenty minutes or so and didn’t play with our usual pace and intensity. The boys know it.

“When we play with pace in the final third, we’re a match for most sides. We did that for maybe 25 minutes tonight but the challenge is can the lads do it for 90 minutes?”

City get the chance to follow the manager’s advice away in the league this Saturday to Saltdean United (3pm); and they are back at Oaklands Park against Lancing on Bank Holiday Monday (11am).

Starting teams: City – Ender, Watts, Lee, Martin, Hartley, Way, Thoms, Dolcetti, Clack, Kanjanda, HutchingsSelsey – Boyt, Low, Abdo, Madden, Kilhams, Lynch, Manners, Chittock, Goulding, Clarke, Morey.
